Generations Ahead
Job Title:
Project Director on Racial Justice and Human Rights
Salary Range:           Commensurate with experience
Benefits:                Full medical, dental, vision and paid vacation
Job Status:                Full time, exempt
Start Date:                June 1, 2008

Generations Ahead is committed to expanding the public debate and policy-making on human genetics to include the voices, values and priorities of historically marginalized communities.  We work to insert a social justice and human rights perspective in the discussions about the social and political implications of reproductive and genetic technologies for human relationships and societal justice. With a growing network of social justice leaders and organizations, we are increasing cross-movement knowledge about these technologies, expanding organizational capacities to engage in advocacy and agenda-setting, and building a shared social justice coalition and policy agenda.  Generations Ahead grew out of a program at the Center for Genetics and Society in 2008.

Racial Justice and Genetic Technologies: While science and media promote genetic promises for social and medical advancements  (e.g., tracing lost ancestry or the ability to solve crimes much faster) the potential uses of these technologies to genetically encode and cement structural inequalities is often not part of the discussion.  Depending on how they are used, certain genetic technologies can produce helpful or harmful outcomes for communities of color. There is a disturbing lack of public debate to discern beneficial applications from dubious ones, particularly from the perspective of historically discriminated against groups. It’s important that we keep race and the potential for discriminatory outcomes at the forefront of any discussion related to these technologies, since the potential dangers include re-introducing a biological (genetic) definition of race and new forms of eugenics.

The primary goal of this project is to alert racial justice and human rights leaders and organizations about these potential dangers and organize them into a national network of advocates to broaden public debates and policy-making to include their perspectives and concerns.  The project director will present publicly on these issues; organize and inspire leaders and organizations to engage; and create opportunities for action, alliance-building and advocacy with racial justice, human rights and other social justice constituencies.

Major Responsibilities/Activities

  • Develop and implement a strategy to engage and organize racial justice leaders and organizations nationally
  • Develop differentiated positioning and messaging on the implications, benefits and concerns for communities of color
  • Build the relationships, alliances, knowledge, leadership and capacity of allies to present a visible and effective voice for racial justice and human rights constituencies on these issues.
  • Define and disseminate a racial justice and human rights analysis for understanding and governing the new reproductive and genetic technologies.
  • Present publicly; educate and brief organizations.
  • Work collaboratively with local and national allies
  • Monitor and engage with new research, technology development and policies.

Desired Qualities and Requirements

  • Three-five years of organizing, advocacy and/or alliance-building experience required, with proven ability to meet ambitious goals
  • Relationships with national racial justice leaders and organizations
  • Experience in developing innovative, compelling, and differentiated positioning
  • Demonstrated capacity for understanding and developing strategy
  • Ability to write and speak persuasively; excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills to work productively in a fast-paced, evaluation and goal-oriented organization
  • Balance of creativity and strategic thinking
  • Strong skills in multi-tasking, project management and self-management.
  • Proven ability to work well within a team in a highly collaborative environment
  • Enjoyment of political and intellectual challenges combined with an aptitude and initiative to translate new political challenges into organizing activities, strategies and programs.

Personal/Work Characteristics

  • Entrepreneurship: You relish start-up projects. You bring energy, enthusiasm, and a ton of initiative with you to the office.
  • Strong work ethic: You set high standards of excellence and persist until ambitious goals are achieved. You are resourceful and innovative at tackling complex challenges in a sustainable, pro-active fashion.
  • Passionate commitment to learning and social justice: You are committed to social justice in all its complexity and utilize continuous learning, reflection and evaluation to improve all areas of work.
  • Accountability: You are a results-oriented team player who leads by example, holds yourself accountable for performance and takes absolute ownership.
  • Flexibility and adaptability: You should be able to switch gears in various situations and apply yourself to quickly understanding and integrating new challenges.

Physical Requirements
The employee works primarily in an office environment with extended periods of talking by phone and working at a computer. The position also requires local and national travel.  Our office is located in downtown Oakland, California, with convenient access to BART and AC Transit system.

Compensation includes generous benefits, is competitive and will depend on experience.
