Canal Youth Organize Alternative 5 de Mayo Celebration

Youth leaders from the Canal Alliance College Program are organizing the Third Annual Unity4commUnity in Honor of 5 de Mayo event. Entertainment for this afternoon celebration features the diversity the Canal neighborhood – including tango, salsa, & belly, and Maya dancers, reggeaton singers, and a Pop en Español band .
The event promotes a safe, alcohol-free, family oriented environment to enjoy this holiday which commemorates the victory of Mexican forces led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The public may call 454-2640 from more event information.

Community members are calling for human rights, unity, social services and sanctuary. The march will be a multicultural, intergenerational event, planned by a coalition of community based organizations, community clinics, labor unions, student groups, and anti-war organizations.
